Steve
Hi Simon, Welcome to paramotoring. It's the most often stated thing on this forum, and is very true, but don't think about buying kit until you have seen and played with some. Your best bet would be to try a taster with a school or meet up with some pilots in your area to see what's what. It's a great sport but you'd be upset to find that you've not bought the right kit once you're actually flying. You really don't know what you want or need at this stage so don't worry about it yet, just get some hands-on with kit. If you let us know whereabouts in the country you are then someone will be able to point you towards your nearest school.

Steve
I think Fly Sky High Sports is in your area but I don't know much about them. I don't know how far from Chichester you are (a couple of hours?) but Sussex Paramotors are excellent http://www.sussexparamotors.co.uk. Maybe someone from Kent can chime in?
